Updates

I hope everyone is staying warm and dry now that winter has finally arrived.  We have been busy in the classroom.  Here are some updates on our work and upcoming events.

Reading:  We are reading stories about working together.  In small groups we have been doing a lot of non-fiction.  We will start novel studies next week.  Your child will either be reading Boxcar Children or Bunnicula
Writing:  We have been working on persuasive letters for a few weeks.  This week we wrote letters to fellow Irving students urging them to be safe.
Math:  We started our geometry unit.  This is a fun, hands-on unit.  We continue to practice our facts as often as possible.  If you haven't gone on to xtra math for a while, hop on and try it out again!
Social Studies:  We have been working on google presentations on the three branches of government.  Our fourth grade reading buddies will be helping us put the final touches on these presentations on Monday.  This will serve as the fourth graders' introduction to the three branches. We are excited to be the teachers this time around!

Valentines Day
We will not be having a party on Valentine's Day, but we will be doing special centers that morning.  One of the centers is to deliver Valentines.  Please see your email for an attachment with the names of all the students in our class.  There are 24 students in our class.  I told the kids they could attach anything they wanted to their Valentines, but we would not be eating any candy in school.  (There might just be a healthy treat for them to make and eat at one of the centers...)

Homework Next Week
No homework beyond the reading log, map and spelling next week.  If your child has some incomplete work, I will send that home.  Don't forget to send a decorated box in by Thursday.  A shoe box or cereal box will work.

Fun Fair
Make sure to join us for a fantastic time at Irving's Fun Fair on February 23. This great event is a huge fundraiser for our school and an great opportunity for us to come together as the awesome community that we are.
