December 3-7

A GIANT "Thank You!" goes out to our fabulous chaperones today!  It was a great trip.  I am sure your child will tell you the highlights!

Reading:  We are in the thick of our fairy tale study.  Ask your child about what features a fairy tale has.  We start writing tomorrow!
Math:  Keep practicing time and money.  We are working on making change this week.  We will learn by counting UP to the amount paid from the price.  This allows students to add instead of subtract.

If you can give-there are lots of opportunities
1.  Pennies for Sandy:  Student Council is sponsoring a penny drive for schools affected by Hurricane Sandy. It runs all week. It works like this:
  • Each penny is a point for your class.
  • Each silver coin is a point against your class.
  • Kids are allowed to deliver silver coins to OTHER classes, in an attempt to get the most points, from 8:00-8:15 in the morning.
  • It has become rather competitive.
2.  Girl Scouts are still running the glove drive.  Gloves should match and be new.
3.  There is also a coat drive.   The coats can be worn and clean.

You will be receiving an email from one of our room parents, Kate Haarvei about our fairy tale party and supplies and help that is needed.  Thanks to Kate for coordinating this.  The party will be on Thursday, December 20th from 12:00-1:15.  The winter concerts are the day before.

Finally, I wanted to let you know that I will be out of the classroom on Friday, December 14 and will return on Wednesday, December 19th.   I have an opportunity to travel to see the caves of Lascaux in Southern France in preparation for the Field Museum exhibit that opens in February on the caves.  The students will read a book about this cave in our guided reading groups next week.  (This is a VERY cool coincidence that the book we are supposed to read is about the very cave I'll be visiting!  What are the odds?!)  As of right now Mrs. Lococo will be my sub.  I will let you know if that changes.
