November 5-9
We had a great time at the Field Museum.
Thanks to all the chaperones for giving up your day. The kids learn so much more in smaller groups. The behind the scenes tour was a success. Please check out the pictures in the slide show on the left.
We will receive a check from Whole Foods next week for $4,590 for the Irving Schoolyard!!!!!!
Their store averages $70K per day, and they exceeded $91K on Thursday, Nov 1. This is a fundraising record for local Whole Foods store, aside from the store downtown. We are told that this was the most successful 5% day the River Forest Whole Foods has sponsored. Way to go Irving School! I saw a lot of my students there that afternoon. You guys are the best!
Homework this week has no spelling. We will be reviewing missed words from last week and other spelling patterns. (We were also too busy on Monday to take the pre-test.) The rest of the packet is thick, but pretty simple and straightforward.
Reading: We will spend another week practicing making inferences. We'll also do a quick review of cause and effect.
Math: Money. Money. Money. Place Value. Money. (Do you get the picture?) We will be spending A LOT of time going over money and place value in the next month. We have two wonderful volunteers who come in once a week to practice individually with your child. Anytime you think of it-have your child count the coins in your pocket. Practice is crucial. For those students already able to count money-we'll be making change soon.
Science: Today at the Field Museum officially kicked off our Science unit on Rocks and Mineral. Does your child have a special rock at home? Send it in! We will be learning about properties of a rock, the rock cycle, and soil.
Finally, don't forget to vote tomorrow! The kids voted today in Irving's election. Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney by 450 votes.
