October 22-26

Using our new writing folders
Joe and Caden sorting nouns and verbs during centers.

Writing:  We are working on a narrative story with a hook beginning and a "go back" ending.  Throughout the year we focus on organizing our writing so it has a clear beginning, middle and end.  Our new writing privacy folders are awesome!  Thanks to all the families who helped put these together!

Reading:  We've been working hard on identifying the main idea and detail when we read.  We are also using context clues when we don't know a word.  I've been working with the kids in small groups on these same skills.  The kids keep busy working on centers when they are not in a reading group.

Math: We continue to work on addition strategies.  We are also practicing frames and arrows, which introduces some of our algebraic thinking.

Social Studies:  We wrapped up our unit on Neighborhoods and will take the test this week.  Next up is an exciting Science unit on Rocks and Minerals!

Volunteer? There are two volunteer opportunities that I'm hoping to fill.  The first is an in-class/once a week opportunity to read with students to help them develop fluency.  This would take about 45 minutes and you would be working individually with about 4 students each week.  The second opportunity is for someone who wants to help from home.  We get Scholastic News each month, but the issues are all collated.  It would be great if once a month I could have a parent separate issues into 4 piles.  It would take about 45 minutes per month.  Let me know if you are interested in either one of these opportunities.

Field Trip: We have a field trip coming up to the Field Museum on Monday, November 5th.  We could use about 5 chaperones.  Unfortunately, because of our class sizes this year there is very limited room on the bus and our chaperones will have to carpool or meet us there.  If you are interested, send me a quick email and I'll reserve a spot.  A permission slip and chaperone letter will go out late next week.
